Gray, drab walls will only keep your attention for a short while before an adventure turns as bleak. A room just isn't interesting if there's nothing in it. (http://inkjar.net/Roleplaying/Toolbox/Lessons_Learned/How_to_handle_environmental_obstacles) A mansion has well-furnished rooms, dungeons have loose chains clanking against damp stone walls, while ruins are blanketed in rubble and debris. Of course, now that you have something of interest be careful that they don't use it against you or that you are at least prepared, or you might be peppered with objects of interest in the room you're currently in.
