I think period pieces are usually a lot more dramatic; think FY in ancient china
futureistic stories usually have a lot of action, mechs, ships,apocoliptic settings etc.
I like a variety of both.

I watch a lot of stuff that takes place in the present. GTO, Fruits Basket,Yu Yu Hakusho etc but I also like some of the futuristic stuff like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun. Inu Yasha and Fushigi Yuugi are both good series based in the past. I like a little bit of everything.

past such as inuyasha is fine with me. present is an iffy, but stuff in the future, like Lain for instance, that have stuff they think is in the past but still not in the present for us is Prett awesome.

I would have to say that I like future based Anime more, like Ghost in the Shell, Gundam, ect, because they usually have more drama. Some past based Anime is also good, like Inuyasha.
