I was recently asked to write a short poem with a simple writing scheme about wise women for a croning ceremony. I used the following website as a learning tool and for my inspiration.
http://www.croning.org/pages/534083/index.htm
I recommend reading the poem first and then read the meanings in the spoilers afterwards. I have received praise for the poem from all the wise women in my life and thought I should share it with my friends here as well.
Wise Women by Andrew Hinkle
First verse
The sun descends near mountains west,
Accept your shadow before night's rest.
Meaning: The natural cycle of life is nearing its end. Acknowledge age and be proud of it.
Cycle: maiden (beginning), mother (middle), and crone (end).
The moon has waxed its final reign,
Settle down through its eternal wane.
Meaning: Symbolic, if not physical, end of a woman's monthly cycle.
Spirits radiant in sky stars bright,
Peel away clouds for maiden's sight.
Meaning: Elderly women pass on their infinite knowledge to the next generation.
Seal away dreaded seasons fall and winter,
Release anew fountains spring and summer.
Meaning: Toss aside doubts and worries. Harness the power of wisdom and experience.
Second verse
Stray not from the derelict flock lost
Lead the herd to meadows long sought.
Meaning: Lead people to a brighter future without stubbornly sticking to the past. Heal the people by resolving differences.
Welcome in each to nest of safe haven,
Feed the precious apple souls do raven.
Meaning: Share knowledge, wisdom, and experience with any who should listen.
Song and verse tell lessons learned,
Weave a story experience hard earned.
Meaning: Culture and tradition were historically passed orally to children through women.
Scattered seeds sown in memory's deep cage,
Blossom fruits to nourish aspiring attache.
Meaning: Women are the nurturer's of the earth. Crones are wise, because of their past experiences.
