Yeah "1979" was my first favorite song, when I first heard of them. I accidentally mistaked them as The Rolling Stones doing that song. After searching online years ago, I realized it definitely was the Smashing Pumpkins.

I ran into the same song on Naspterlinks. I've been able to hear the full length song by signing up and entering my email address.
