I got patches of various plants (foxglove,lambs ear, lemon balm, cosmos, spmint) bigger then a kitchen table. almost the size of queen size bed. I fattened up the garden earlier this spring cuz I knew it was going to need room. a lotta shit got bigger then I thought it would in just one summer. so I started moving shit. I gave tree a big chunk of yarrow, but I still gotta move some of that shit from where it is cuz I got roses that need more room.
i have the mini roses like crazy out in the main bed. red pink purple yellow O_O and they are just thriving out there. and the deer leave em alone! :happy:
I started moving plants aka expanding the garden -_-; I had to move a grape, blueberry, strawberry, 2 chunks of the lemon balm, mums, two clematis and I moved a Rose of Sharron out there and it bloomed for me n everything :happy: I already have the bed made fer sledges peppers fer next year :meh: I stuck a hydrangia in (white flowers) and have a lotta bulbs to go in. tulip, allium, chrocus,some other flowers I cant remember -_-;
I have 8 Dahlia and a 3 or 4 Caladiums to bring in. and six of those Dahlia are going to have to go somewhere else next year cuz theres no room for em where they are -_-; which means I still have to make new beds for them -_-;
yar

at least weeds arent a serious problem
they shouldnt be considering I weed w/ a shovel instead of a puny spade -_-;
new empty beds wont need mulch cuz they'll all get a turn over b4 spring planting and that will take care of the weeds.
for now weeding and makin the new beds are at the top of the 2do list

my back yard is slowly dieing, we're getting cold snaps down here in MD. 1/2 the garden is going to die today in the cold and the rain cause of the hurrican left overs.
But gardening is better than mowing now isn't it lady?

I walked out to the garden a couple of days ago.

For the most part, all the grass and mulch was covered with a layer of snow.

The stepping stones had warmed up enough in the sun to melt off all the snow so they were all wet/dark.

A lot of the perennials are still standing, though they've died back for the year and are dried up. The lemon balm finally died back, but a lot of it was burnt by the frost b4 it gave it up for the year. Some of the leaves are almost black. The andromeda is still green, but everything else is wheat colored. Even dead the garden still looks pretty.

So, anyway, I've decided that aside from what I already have to go into the new beds, I want something that will have winter color. Probably Heather, I have Mexican heather out there now. It got pretty big before we got snow so I'm pretty sure it was well established.

The garden is up for some changes this spring. Its way too small the size it was last spring. The center bed with all the stepping stones will be primarily for my mini roses, there is also a huge patch of foxglove that I put back there from my plant in the front. There has to be at least 20 of them. It would be amazing to see them all blooming at once. Probably not this year, but maybe next. There's some red poppy, lupine that I really hope lives. It was lookin pretty sad there for a while. The lemon balm, the yarrow, all the other miscellaneous plants. I liked having the herbs in there too. I'll put in some more roses in, some herbs and a few marigolds and orange calendula for color and to keep the deer out.

the southern bed in the back will have leggier plants. Different mints and more yarrow. It's more of a deer barrier bed then anything else. It's closest to the trail opening and the woods. I'll throw in some tall flowers and be done with it.

The west bed chaos/cosmos can just stay cosmos. There's no point fighting with these damn plants. I had some of them over 10 ft tall by the end of the summer. Nothing can really compete with the cosmos for light either so I guess they can just have the damn bed then!

I started moving some of the lemon balm out of the east bed. There’s other places I need it to keep the deer out and that bed was beginning to look a lot like a cluster fuck. After the Iris in that bed are done I'm weeding and moving some plants. I'm not totally set at what’s going to replace the lemon balm, probably something that is attractive to butterflies.

Where the orange day lilies (I usually call them Tiger Lilies) they are now the back of a mum bed. I'll stick a few more baby mums in there in the spring and throw in yellow and orange calendula. Everything will even out in height.

There is a new bed where I transplanted a rose of Sharon late last summer. I have a dahlia that flowers like the ros that I will put in there and I'll put some blue lobelia in there for ground cover. Then I'll have the red white and blue patch to the garden.

I moved 2 clematis into their own patch and gave them something to climb. They should get full sun for the most part. I think one of them is red, but honestly I can’t remember what color they are. Oh well, it will be a surprise.

The strawberry, blueberry, and a grape got moved and the only one not lookin sick before the frost was the strawberry. The damn deer chewed the other two so I need something to keep the deer away that won’t compete with the frigin strawberry for room. Maybe rosemary.

Before I had to stop digging I was working on 2ish fairly large beds. They will be primarily full sun and with the room I need these beds will almost triple the size of the garden I already have a few things planted in what’s been cleaned out. A hibiscus, some other mums, white Echinacea, purple Echinacea, a black locus tree, a few other things. These beds have to be huge; I have a lot of stuff that has to go in there.

I have 6 or more dahlia that need some wicked room. They got giant last summer. I had flowers bigger then my hand. I have a lot of perennials to start from seed. Most of them I'll grow in patches together so they can establish themselves this year. Hibiscus of a couple different colors. Those will defiantly have to be started inside. Larkspur of different colors, veronica w/p/b, delphinium pastels, more red oriental poppy, 2 kinds of nasturtium, rudbeckia (black eyed Susan) chrysanthemum carinatum, hollyhock, purple Echinacea, sunflowers of various size and color.

Man, it took me 10 minutes to read your last post Lady and boy, I feel a lot more cleverer now :happy:. At the same time, it reminded me of the garden I have at a hill-station. Everything I bring from the city, plants, flower-plants, trees, etc. always die because of my care-taker. It's wierd cos instead of taking care of em, he always kills them. Bluuuudy.

Beats me ! If I'm there for more than 5 days, I could actually witness the mastermind (my caretaker/mass plant murderer) do his work :( ....
But he's kinda cool. His name's Shankar and he's 65. The stories he tells are really laugh-worthy and full time-pass kind. The last time I went, he said that the dog (the one at his place) had been attacked and taken by a tiger, who he chased for a good 8 miles and threw stones at *rolls eyes* ... see, this's what I was talking about ^_^.

Mid April ?! That's really far away from now .... But, do plants die off because of the snow ? I'm figuring they could and most probably would because of the lack of sunlight. But then again, there're plants who can handle the summers and those that can handle winters, like a Christmas Tree ^_^

Sledgstone
January 30th, 2005, 10:47 AM
quite a few of her plants will survive the snow. they just stay dormant until spring. all the fox glove, clematisis (sp?), a bunch of others.. hopefully the grape plants will survive, they were pretty young and some deer ate some branches off of them before winter hit. :\ oh, and the hens and chicks will actually continue to grow underneath the layers of snow. they're cute! ^_^

Ladywriter
January 30th, 2005, 10:55 AM
most plants either straight up die or go through a dormant phase once we start getting frost at night. Frost is generally what kills the plant. It burns the leaves, killing them and that suffocates the plant. Usually its end of September or October, but I still had annuals (plants that die and don't come back) growing well into the fall. It was fairly mild here right up until December.
Decidious trees (trees that lose their leaves) most shrubs and the grasses all go dormant in the cold. Some shrubs produce their fruit in winter as apposed to summer. Christmas trees and other evergreens are conifers, they have needles instead of leaves that stay green year round. There are a couple of spruce trees in the yard taller then a 3 story building.

This once, I'm guessing 2 years back, when I'd left the door open in the afternoon, hell was upon me. I was taking a nap and I forgot to lock my front-main door and because of my negligence, there were 2 monkeys strolling my hall ^_^:. I am scared of monkeys. Period. And when that happened, I totally screached like somebody was pinching my balls or something aka the BeeGees voice. I guess that frightened them and they left running :oops:. Although I'm scared of them smaller monkeys, I love apes :happy: *is probably petrified of em too ^_^:*

hmm.. I'm not quite sure what to do.

My Gardenia (Yunalesca) has mites. I'm not sure if they are predator mites or spider mites or maybe both. The plant isn't dieing, but there is evidence of spider mite damage. There are no webs tho, indicating something is keeping spider mite population down. It could be my incessant watering of the bitch tho. I'm not sure.
I could hit it with a pestacide and kill em all, but I dont want to kill any of the predator mites. Yunalesca is going in the garden come spring and I want the predator mites to go with. There are other plants out there that will benifit from having those inscets out there.
I thought about getting some ladybugs, but you can only order a lot of them. I only need a few at the moment. I'll put something out by the garden for the ladybugs in the spring. They eat all kinds of bad bugs.

The problem is I have to start my Hibiscus soon. I'm just about out of room for plants in the kitchen unless I kill something off. That means the seedlings would have to be in with Yunalesca.

This frigin gardenia is a pain in my ass, but the flowers are worth it -_- . I'm not bringing it in again in the fall. I'm going to go for making a micro climate facing sw for a couple of plants. I'll even cover it up in the winter. If the roots dont totaly freeze it might make it.

Godgrave
February 14th, 2005, 11:11 PM
If you add Ladybugs, would they kinda find their way into your house or something ? And that's good thinking about the creation of a different environment/climate for hte plants. Is that why people have those green-house kinda rooms with plants in em ?

Ladywriter
February 15th, 2005, 08:20 AM
As long as the ladybugs have a place to live out by the garden, they should stay out there. Ocassionally they swarm the house anyway, but they dont get inside very often.
A greenhouse room in a house is generally called the sun room or the Florida room. Most of the time the room is on the south end of the house. It's a great place to keep sensitive plants over the winter in cold ass places like NY.

Godgrave
February 15th, 2005, 11:01 AM
Are you thinking of having one, or you've got one already ^_^ ??? I've never actually seen one, but I have an idea from Minority Report.
I wouldn't know American bylaws when it comes to construction, and I say this because I wanted to ask you, whether you could easily make a Green House without a lot of paperwork or permissions or government hindrances ? Over here, even at my cottage at that hillstation, I'm not allowed to raise my roof or construct anything outside the already constructed house.

Ladywriter
February 16th, 2005, 07:41 AM
To add a room to the house or build a greenhouse out in the yard I would have to get a building permit from the town. I wouldnt do it here cuz I rent, but once we buy a house ... ^___^

What you could do is buy one of those little portable green houses, that you can take down if it becomes prudent to do so.
I just finished putting one up in my yard here, and the thing seems like it'll be a good investment. They're supposed to handle upto 50mph wind, 3inches of snow, and upto stone sized hail.
Since it isn't a permenent structure, the city can't say jack, and if the neighbors complain, just have Sledge and one of his buds move it; the damn thing only weighs 75lbs plus plants.

I've been here 6 years this month. My landlord finally mentioned selling the property to me :rolleyes:
There's a lot to be done here; 3 old chiken coops that need to be torn down and an old barn too. i would also become a landlord to the house in front till I tear that bitch down and put in a grove of trees... I dunno. I guess it depends on how much he wants for the place. The location is just so amazing that it would suck to miss out on it....
before I put up a greenhouse, I'm putting in a pool :p

That's a god idea...animal hair is hell on the filters...-_-; I hada pool at my old house, and the dogs just kept jumping in, we didn't think anything of it until the filter tank split. Seems that the hair isn't as porous as ours, and it clogs it enough that the pressure can't go anywhere else.
And for fair warning, to get all teh chemicals and shit to start teh pool, I hope your willing to dole out about $2000 or more depending on the size or pool you get(Mine was 24' cir and 4' deep). Just thought you'd like the info.

well, it will still be several weeks (I'm thinking May) before I put them in the ground outside in the garden. I still have to finish digging out one huge new bed where several new plants are going to go. Can't do that 'till about mid to end of April. The soil here is really rich (cemetarys and woods all around). Hibiscus usually get about 2ft tall, but most of my plants go over and above average sizes.

It's gone up to somewhere in the 40's everyday all week. The snow is almost gone except where it was real deep or doesnt get a lot of sun. I have already started raking away the covering of last falls leaves from the beds (otherwise they would ferment/mold/nasty. It's okay in a compost pile to let em do that, but some mold/fungus can hurt spring plants coming up.)
We got 3 inches of snow last nite -_-;

well.. it's on. and I didn't even have time for a full on Blitz season. I already gotta sunburn and pulled a muscle or a tendon or some shit in my wrist. most of the new huge bed is ready for planting. it's gonna be one big muthafuckin flower bed. I have about 1/3 of it left to dig out and just a little fairly ez weeding. I have weeding to do in all the other beds too except for the clematis. Wufei (the giant goldfish we had that finally died last fall) is burried in a spot I need to weed, but I dun wanna accidently unearth his remains (ewwwwwwwwwwww) I think I burried him deep enough tho. He was a huge fish so I burried him at baby tree depth and I dont have to go that deep to get the roots of the weeds.

I had tubers that were already producing plants while they were still in plastic bags. 4 plants had to go in the ground already so I have them covered w/ old aquariums cuz we're still getting 30 degree nights this week. -_-;

I'll guess it will be another 2 weeks before its weeded, edged and mulched to my satisfaction. Once its "done" I'll be able to sit out there and chill... and maybe plan where the next new bed will go :p
I'm going to try my hardest not to start anymore new beds this season. I've already more then doubled the size of the garden from last year. It's a great deal of grunt work- I dig down at least 6 inches to get all the grass root, my wheelbarrow sux ass and hauling dirt in that pig is tuff and exausting. By the time I'm done edging I think I will have had my fill of hauling dirt for the season -_-;
I'm pretty aggrivated. I'm haveing difficultu finding yellow snapdragons, lavender, heather, and wisteria -_-;

there aren't too many bugs, mostly when I'm digging its ants, spiders and various larva (eww, I know... sick) The spiders get outta the way and if the larva is in the way I just flick it with the edge of the trowel. I fuckin hate the ants tho, alotta the bastards bite -_-; and they'll climb right under your clothes.
It took a little getting used to. the first couple times I grabbed a worm or grub (or half of one if I disected the thing with the shovel) I was kinda grossed out ^_^;
I went and got another 1oo+ feet of garden hose today so I can have water out on the garden rather than 80 trips back and forth with my lil watering can.

Is there like anything you cannot plant in a garden ... in the context of this - My mom once told me when I was a kid that if we planted chillies in a garden, it's believed to bring alongwith it a lot of fighting in the family. So I was just wondering ... do you guys believe that sorta stuff :meh:.

Sledgstone
June 4th, 2005, 07:35 PM
the only things we won't plant in the garden is stuff not suitable for the area, like orange trees. but now that you said that, i don't think i'll plant any chillies. :p

Why're Orange trees bad ^_^ ? Do they bring along a lot of insects/kill plants in their immediate vicinty ?

Ladywriter
June 5th, 2005, 10:29 AM
different plants thrive in different zones.
http://www.blossomswap.com/zone.html
Orange trees need a warmer climate then what we have up here in NY
My perennials have to be able to tolerate cold temps, way below freezing. We had temps this past winter that fell to 20 below zero. -_-;

Godgrave
June 5th, 2005, 12:39 PM
Ohhh that's the reason. But whatever you do, you should SHOULD have a Time Tree (if I remember correct from Inu Yasha ... that's what she had in the present I guess *knocks on his forehead to remember*) somewhere in your garden. It'll also be your very own personal love corner too ^_^ heh, that'd rock.

What a fuckarow. -_-;
Due to bad weather and being sick I just got the dahlia tubers out of the ground. I lost one completely that was dug up but left out when I was sick. The workbench in the basment is now covered with dalhia clumps drying up on recycled wrapping paper. I'll let em dry up for about 4 days before I knock the rest of the dirt off clean em up divide em up and store em. Just slightly screwed when it comes to knowing what's what. I didnt mark any of em but the yellow for color/type. ^_^: Oh well, next year it will just be a suprise neh? :p
I keep on lookin at that workbench and I can picture grow lights and plants hangin out down there. ^_^; I think I'll start a little grow spot end of January. I have some geranium, some of the icecicle yellow snappers, and that bitch Yunalesca wintering in the house. They're okay in their mostly southern exposed windows for now, but light sux in the winter and in a few they'll need better light to grow well. I can start seeds in Feb and have a shit load of seedlings for the garden in spring.

It must be combursome planting and catering to different sets of plants for different seasons. In 2 days I'll be doing some planting of my own at my cottage's so-called garden. So-called I say because my care-taker kills everything and there's nothing left behind to call a garden per say, bloooody. Have you ever used fertilizers ?

Double G, how exactly is the creataker murdering the garden? Is he putting chemicals on it, digging it up, never watering What???
different plants can survive different tortures :p Some plants (thyme and some moss) dont mind being walked on.
How much sun does the spot get? full sun, partial sun, shade or deep shade are all things to know when picking out plants.
What's the temp and water situation? Does it get very hot and dry for extended periods of time? What is the low temp you get in winter?

If its hard to keep plants alive in your bed, you can try a different style of garden. Asian gardens can have fewer plants, more stones, and the plants can be shrubs bushes or trees that you bansi yourself. Stuff that will take a beating ya know :p
When I settle in a new house one of the exits to the house will lead to a Hill and Pond style asian garden. I dont want a huge water feature so I will use gravel to serve as the dry(river) bed. The water aspect will come from a Shishi Odoshi, I like the rythmic *donk* I already know which plants are going in there too. I have 2 Andromeda that are already being bansi-ed that will sit in front of the mountain. I have a pussywillow tree and I want a weeping (Higan) cherry tree for the space too. Not a lot of flowers or too many colors. google Japanese Garden and have a look.
It's country/english gardens that you find flowering plants growing together in clusters and rows.

http://www.myk.dis.titech.ac.jp/html/images/image006.jpg
'The stone garden Ryoanji temple in Kyoto is a famous example. There are 15 stones in this garden, however you can never see all stones at the same time (Fig.2). Some stones are always hidden by other stones. This is a kind of active incompleteness. So if you want to get a whole image of the garden, you have to walk around in the garden as part of the garden. Then you will be able to co-create the whole image including you as part of the garden. This is the design principle of the co-creation system that is based on active incompleteness and embodiment.'

Poor ol Kaizer's grave (my earlier dog - dalmation by breed), but it's always covered with these tiny white flowery plants ^_^

Yaaay finally atleast one blossomed white rose X'D ... I dunno how my caretaker managed that. To the immediate left of the rose, one step back is a shoeflower plant and right next to it is a rasberry / mulberry plant. He's gonna kill them soon, so I had to take pictures >_> ...

That's me (with my eyes closed as always \m/) beside a 'Marigold' flower bed that I planted myself ^_^ ... it took an hour when I went there a few months back and was surprised to see them alive even ^_^ ... in the background is my aunt's cottage with her garden.

Now that was supposed to be a road ! The monsoon this year was really nasty and about 15 meters of the road alongwith the tar and soil sorta got washed away ... ofcourse part reason could also be the increase of hotels in the area resulting in cutting of loads of tree land, amounting to things like this. The drop is around 50 - 60 feet ...

Ladywriter
March 28th, 2006, 01:55 PM
whoa O_O the road looks hella scary! A lotta sand and clay ne?
the phlox :p are very pretty . marigold are unappealing to most wildlife too. Deer wont eat em. Generally I plant marigold or mint near plants that deer and other critters might want to snack on.
A lot of roses (most actually) need a good hacking down before growing season gets going. they're one of those plants that wont grow new green on old wood.
there seems to be quite the mix of sun and shade in your garden. you can probably get away with growing stuff that is more sensitive to hot afternoon sunlight.
were you thinking of reworking the beds so that there is a variety of different stuff in each one? each individual bed can be designed to be its own lil ecosystem. Plants that complement each others growing conditions (like how acidic the soil is, how much sun) difference in color and leaf texture give each bed it's own unique look ;)
I grow lavender and mini roses together. I also put some mint, sage, yarrow (yarrow strengthens the herbs it grows with. makes em more potent) and a couple other herbs (Irises for spring) in the bed together.
I'll get some pics of the disaster and show ya :p

Heh, NO ! The red mud you see is the mountain itself ^_^. The soil is rich in iron, which explains the coloration. f you look at the mountain from a distance, you see a thin line ... and part of that line is what we see in the pic x_x

Ladywriter
March 29th, 2006, 10:52 PM
okay then ... :p
What you want is some hearty perennials, something even the caretaker would have difficulty killing ^_^;

Coneflower Echinacea spp. These come in a variety of colors, purple being most widly used in gardens. I have purple and white. They will tolerate full sun or part shade.
Black eyed Susan Rudbedkia
Butterfly Bush Buddleia Mine is purple.

Lupine like shade, but not deep shade. (Deep shade never gets direct sunlight) The same applies to lilys.
Vinca aka Periwinkle aka myrtle will grow in shade to deep shade.
Most Hosta and Ferns also prefer to be out of the sun espically in the afternoon. And never underestimate the power of moss! Moss is soo cool I've already started collecting some for my shade patch :p

Do a google search for low maintenance, perennials and see what you like.
Start with the tallest plants or the spring bloomers in the center and work out filling to the edge with low growing plants.

I'll look up some more later.

You bet CG *cries all over her feet*, but the only solace I found was in knowing that nature did that to my plants rather than my caretaker killing them >_>'

Lady, can't wait to see your garden now ...

I have a garden at my grandma's house (her back yard is in the woods). Mainly I just have plants around my house. Nothing speacial alot of red, pink, white, and a little purple here and there to give my little brick house some color.
